as a balm to the isolated + digital nature of my research + writing practice for the main part of this chimaera project, i have been initiating AFK (“away from keyboard”) community projects/explorations around the concept of chimaera.
this project is mutable. i would love to explore future AFK iterations at varying scales/durations and in new sites, with the right support. pls get in touch if you have ideas. <3 daelyn

AFK ITERATION #1: May 2023 :
i lovingly refer to what’s happening at the lloyd center (in 2023, devoid of “anchor” stores, ephemerally filled with pop-up markets, indie shops, and creative projects) as the “occupation and reanimation of the empty husk of capitalism” ; so it felt like the perfect site to situate this initial experiment in mutation, worldbuilding + destroying. i put out a call, gathered 50+ fellow chimeric creatives, and rented the space next to Hot Topic for a couple weeks of art and rad, free, community programming. click the links below to see what transpired:

AFK ITERATION #2: April - August 2024 :
inspired by the resonance of the chimaera theme specifically amongst trans artists in iteration 1, i founded a small temporary collective of trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming artists to build a single, mutating installation together, as an offsite element of the 2024 Oregon Contemporary Artists’ Biennial. the project was as much about the work we created as it was about simply being together in space, caring for one another, and having conversations that fed our hearts. click below for more info:

CHIMÆRA :
chi·me·ra
/kīˈmirə,kəˈmirə/
1: an imaginary or mythical animal compounded of incongruous parts.
2: an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues, formed by processes such as grafting, or mutation.
3: a fabrication of the mind; which is hoped or wished for, but in fact is illusory or impossible to achieve.
chimæra invite us to give form to the impossible. what can we generate, undermine, or expose when we fuse together elements that were previously separate?
